The Heiress Effect

The Heiress Effect - Courtney Milan So I loved book two of The Brothers Sinister. We have once again chemistry for days between the two leads, and the awesomeness that comes when the male hero realizes that for all of his talk, he is not as brave as the heroine is.

The heroine, Jane Fairfield, is a late in life heiress. We find out that Jane inherited her fortune when she was a teenager, and found out then, that the man she thought was her father, was not. Jane is biding her time until her younger sister, Emily, is of age so that she can move her, and her sister from their uncle's home.

The hero, is Oliver Marshall. Readers already know him from The Duchess War. Readers also know that Oliver is a bastard and half brother to the Duke of Clermont. Oliver wants a life in politics and is doing his very best to fit in with the right people, even though they are all kinds of horrible and talk about him like he is not there.

When Jane and Oliver meet at a dinner we get to see Oliver cringe inwardly at the gaudy heiress who does not seem to know how to say the right things at all. Oliver we find has sympathy for her, since he remembers all too well how he didn't fit in initially with the right people either. There is a wrench thrown in the works, when the Marquess of Bradenton promises to throw votes Oliver's way in order for him to ruin Ms. Fairfield that is when we get to see how Oliver has let his morals lapse in order for him to get to his overall goal.

The chemistry between Jane and Oliver once Oliver realizes that Jane is doing her best to put off potential suitors was off the charts. I loved their byplay with each other. I also loved that we do have Jane knowing almost as soon as Oliver is given the offer to ruin her, that Oliver was asked to ruin her as well. That still doesn't stop her from seeking him out or vice versa.

We do have another romance in the works with Jane's sister and also something happening between Sebastian and Violet. I am assuming readers find out more in The Countess Conspiracy. I honestly wish that we did not segue into whatever was going on with Sebastian and Violet since we didn't get equal weight between the two sisters and their love interests.

The main foil to Jane and Oliver being together really is themselves though. Jane does not want to be a quiet wife to a politician. And Oliver does not want someone as loud and garish as Jane as his wife. I am not going to lie, I was pretty irked that we had Oliver up until Jane came up with a great idea still not sure what he was going to do. I can say that I was disappointed in Oliver pretty much up until the end when he realized that he may reach his ambitions but lose what makes him into a good man.

There are love scenes though which I was disappointed in since we do go back to that the first time is the best time ever thing.

I wish we had gotten more time with Minnie and Robert and the other couples all together though.

The book did have problems with pacing here and there and that I think is because we were switching between Jane and Emily and their romances.
